Richard and Elizabeth Stern was visiting Brier Island this weekend. Here is the list of their sightings.
Liz and I spent from Fri. noon to this morning on Brier Island. Friday was warm and sunny - the rest was wet, windy and cold. Water levels were very high and the W.Light road was becoming flooded below Camp Rd. Birds of note included --
- Brant .................. ~150, mainly in Pond Cove
- Snow goose ....... 2 in the estuary along Digby neck, on Friday. Not relocated today.
- Black scoter ....... Several in Pond Cove
- Turkey vulture .... appr. 8, no doubt attracted by at least 3 dead seals on Pond Cove beach
- Rough-legged hawk ... 1 light phase flying N.E. over Whipple Pt.
- Am. kestrel .......... 1 over Freeport
- Am.woodcock ...... 1 at dusk at our Camp
- Snowy owl ........... 1 (prob. ad. F), in the big Meadow. Seen by us yesterday and others for the last few days. Some local people have seen 2 recently below W.Light.
- E.Phoebe ............ at least 3 around the island
- E.kingbird ........... 1 flew in near our camp. Because of the early date for this species I tried hard to make it into something more exotic, but it was just an eastern.
- Brown-h. cowbird .. 3+ M. and 3+ F. in Westport.
+ the usual and expected on Brier. No exotics or rarities! We also had a good chorus of Spring peepers Fri. evening.
